Description
The Old Smithy is a house located in Filkins, likely built in the early 18th century and refurbished in the early 20th century, with 19th and 20th-century extensions. It features coursed rubble limestone with dressed quoins and stone slate roofs, along with flanking rubble stone chimneys. The building is two storeys high with an attic and originally consists of two bays. The early 20th-century three-light windows are designed in a style reminiscent of the 17th and 18th centuries, featuring recessed chamfered stone mullions and leaded glazing. There are also 20th-century gabled roof dormers with two-light leaded casements set in moulded wooden frames. The central door, dating from the 20th century, is framed by a chamfered stone surround and topped with an open pediment hood made of moulded stone, supported by shaped stone scroll brackets. To the right, there is a slightly lower two-storey extension with two bays of paired wooden casements, all featuring dressed stone jambs and stone lintels. Additionally, there is a further single-storey bay at the right end. A 20th-century extension at the rear of the original block includes stone mullion windows that match the style of the main building.
