Description

This large barn, located approximately 50 meters west of Manor Farmhouse, dates from the mid to late 16th century, with an addition made in 1727. It is constructed from random rubble limestone, with ashlar limestone used for the porches, and features a stone slate roof. The barn consists of five bays, with a four-bay addition at the east end, and has north and south porches on both sections.

The earlier part of the barn has central gabled porches, which include vertical timber plank boarding above timber lintels leading to plank barn doors. There are two offset buttresses on the side walls, a chamfered plinth, and a single slit vent beside each buttress. The ends of the barn are gabled with parapets and finials. The 1727 addition has off-centre porches with timber lintels for the plank barn doors, plain verges on the south porch, and a lean-to on the north porch. A datestone inscribed with 'I C / 1727' is set in the gable of the south porch, indicating that John Coxwell was the Lord of Ablington Manor at that time. The east gable end features three slit vents and an iron weathervane.

Inside, the earlier building has a high five-bay arched braced collar truss roof with queen struts, three tiers of purlins, and scattered curved windbracing. All vent slits have splayed reveals, and the floor is made of stone flags. The 1727 addition has a four-bay collar and tie-beam truss roof. The earlier building is a rare example of a barn from this period, with the porches likely extended at a later date, possibly when the 1727 addition was constructed.
