Description
BIBURY ABLINGTON SP 1007-1107 10/47 Barn approximately 50m west of Manor Farmhouse (previously listed as Barn at Manor Farm on West side 23.1.52 of road) II* Large barn. Mid-late C16; addition dated 1727. Random rubble limestone; ashlar limestone to porches; stone slate roof. Five- bay barn with 4-bay addition to east end; north and south porches to both parts. Central gabled porches to earlier building with vertical timber plank boarding above timber lintel to plank barn doors. Two offset buttresses to side walls; chamfered plinth. Single slit vent alongside each buttress. Parapet gabled ends with finials. Off-centre porches to 1727 addition with timber lintels to plank barn doors; plain verges to south porch; lean-to north porch. Datestone set in gable to south porch: 'I C / 1727'- John Coxwell being Lord of Ablington Manor at this date. East gable end has 3 slit vents and iron weathervane. Interior: high 5-bay arched braced collar truss roof to earlier building with queen struts. Three tiers of purlins with scattered curved windbracing. Splayed reveals to all vent slits. Stone flag floor. Four-bay collar and tie-beam truss roof to 1727 addition. The earlier building is a rare example of a barn of this date, the porches being extended at a later date, possibly contemporary with 1727 addition. (Illustrated in ed. C. and A.M.
