Description

Hinton House is a large detached house that incorporates a former row of houses, dated 1753, with early and mid-19th century additions. It is constructed from random and coursed rubble limestone, partly roughcast rendered, and features ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof. The building is two-storey with an attic in the east wing, resulting in an L-shaped plan.

On the east front, the main range extends to the right in two parts. The left part has two windows with 16-pane sash fenestration, while the right part features two-window 16-pane sash fenestration on the upper floor and a tripartite sash window on the ground floor. There is a doorway to the left with a fielded-panelled door, a fanlight, and a flat-roofed porch supported by panelled pilasters, topped with two urns on the parapet.

The south side of the building has a datestone reading 'S T / 1753' and features two-window recessed chamfered mullioned fenestration, with a three-light window on the ground floor and single and two-light windows on the upper floor. The ground floor also has segmental arched fenestration to the right, and there are two gabled dormers with 16-pane sashes in the rendered upper floor. The mixed ridge-mounted chimneys have moulded caps.

On the west side, the staggered rear wall of the main range is built into a bank against the road. There are two 16-pane sashes in gabled eaves-mounted dormers, along with various tall ashlar chimneys featuring moulded caps. The gable end of the south-facing range to the right has an octagonal chimney. The interior has not been inspected. Hinton House was likely built for Samuel Tawney and later enlarged in the early 19th century by William Hinton.
