Description

Downington House is a detached house built in the early 18th century, with later extensions to the rear likely from the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone and features a parapet and a hipped stone slate roof divided into two main sections, along with two large brick stacks. The building has a squarish shape and is mostly two storeys high, with the main façade facing northeast.

The front consists of three bays on the right, topped by a very tall hipped roof that includes a single hipped dormer facing southeast. The left-hand bay has a separate, lower hipped roof that extends backward. The windows include a 12-pane sash in the left-hand bay, two 2-light stone mullion and transom windows in the right-hand bays, and a central bay to the left featuring a round stone arch with full-length margin casements from the 19th century.

On the ground floor, there is a 4-pane sash window to the left, and to the right, two 2-light stone mullion and transom windows, all adorned with a continuous dripmould. The stone doorcase, located to the left of centre, is topped with an open pediment supported by consoles and pilasters, and it features a painted decorative radial fanlight above a wide half-glazed door with two lower recessed panels. In front of the doorcase and the round-arched window is a large square two-storey porch and verandah, which has a swept lead roof and is decorated with intricate woodwork, featuring round arches on the ground floor and straight-headed bays above.

The interior is not accessible but is likely to be of interest.
