Description

The barn and adjoining animal shelter at Irongate Farm is a large structure dating from the late 18th century, although the datestone on the gable is illegible. It is built of coursed rubble stone and features a stone slate roof, except for the lean-tos to the south, which have double Roman tiles.

On the south side, there is a very large projecting gabled two-storey cart entry, which includes a stone relieving arch, a dripmould, a timber lintel, and double timber doors, all framed by dressed stone quoins. Above this entry, there is a small square opening in the gable with a slightly cambered head. There is also an opposed raking entry with a timber lintel, quoins, and double doors, both featuring depressed stone arches on the wall plane. The barn has slit vents throughout and consists of seven bays, supported by king post trusses with tie beams and principal rafters that are all bolted with iron plates. An owl hole is present in the apex of the west gable.

The lean-to on the southeast almost forms a catslide roof and has a quoin doorway adjoining the cart entry. The lean-to on the southwest is lower and was originally a two-bay animal shelter, featuring a cylindrical column embedded in a stone infill wall. On the west side, the shelter extends with a corner hip to the roof, comprising four bays with cambered tie beams, and it turns the corner to splay out at an angle to the northwest with eight bays, some of which are partially blocked and divided by tapering stone columns.
