Description
Douro Lodge is a villa, dating from approximately 1830 to 1850. It was likely designed by R.W. and C. Jearrad. The building is constructed of stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof and iron balconies. It is square in plan, and of double depth, with the main entrance on the right return.
The villa is two storeys high with attics and a basement, and features three first-floor windows. Architectural detailing includes a moulded plinth, quoins to the angles, a moulded first-floor sill band, and windows with tooled architraves. Ground-floor windows have a cornice resting on consoles, while those on the first floor are eared. The detailing incorporates a moulded frieze. The windows are generally 6/6 sashes, with blind boxes. Ground-floor sashes are tripartite, with two 2/2 sashes flanking the central pane; the upper panes of the part-glazed doors are rounded. The central entrance has a solid porch with paired Ionic pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a stepped blocking course. Round-arched windows with keystones are positioned on either side of the porch, with a central round-arched opening incorporating double 4-panel part-glazed doors, an overlight, and a keystone in a tooled architrave. Three attic dormers are present. The garden facade features taller 6/6 sashes with blind boxes, and pedimented attic dormers with 3/3 sashes. The basement also has 6/6 sashes.
The interior remains uninspected.
A continuous ground-floor balcony along the garden facade features an X-motif balustrade. Douro Lodge forms a group with numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 Douro Road, all exhibiting a Classical design with Italianate roof and dormer detailing. The design comprises two pairs of semi-detached villas interspersed with detached villas.
