Description

Pillar box located at the north side of the junction in Malvern Place, Cheltenham. This pillar box was built between 1866 and 1879 and designed by JW Penfold. It was manufactured by the Cochrane Grove Company of Dudley. The structure is made of cast iron and features a hexagonal shape with elaborate leaf decoration, as well as the lettering "VR." Cheltenham is notable for having eight of the 64 remaining Penfold-type Victorian pillar boxes in the country. Other examples of this type can be found in Bayshill Road, College Lawn, Evesham Road, Lansdown Road, Montpellier Walk, Pittville Circus Road, and St Paul's Road.
