Description

Numbers 2 and 3, with attached railings to Number 3, are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1830-1850. The architects were likely RW and C Jearrad. The houses are constructed with stucco over brick, featuring a slate roof, stucco party walls, and end stacks with cornices. They have iron railings. The design is double depth, incorporating outer side stairhalls.

The exterior consists of two storeys with attics and a basement towards the centre, exhibiting eight first-floor windows, with the central four projecting forward. There are single-storey projecting porches to the end ranges. The rear of the end ranges projects, with three storeys, while the central section has two storeys with attics, all built on a basement. Stucco detailing includes quoins to the angles; tooled architraves to the windows, with the first-floor windows being eared and those on the ground floor featuring cornices on consoles and sills. Most windows are 6/6 sashes, with taller windows with blind boxes on the ground floor, except for the ground floor of Number 3 which has 2 x 1/1 sashes. The wide eaves are supported by brackets, and four attic dormers have casements and broken pediments.

Entrances are accessed by flights of roll-edged steps to solid porches. The porch of Number 2 has an additional projecting glazed porch with side-lights and a fanlight (containing some coloured glass), while Number 3 features a round-arched opening with a keystone and fanlight. Both have double four-panel doors, with the door to Number 2 being partially glazed. Number 2 retains four tall end, party-wall, and lateral stacks with cornices. A round-arched staircase sash is present on the right return. At the rear, the end ranges have tripartite sashes to the first and second floors (6/6 between 2/2), similarly to the ground floor of Number 3. Number 2 has a pair of 6/6 sashes, both with tooled architraves and cornices on consoles. Some 6/6 sashes are present elsewhere.

The interior was not inspected.

The attached railings to Number 3 have stick balusters, and form part of a group of buildings with Douro Lodge, Numbers 4 and 5, and Number 6, Douro Road, all sharing a classical design with Italianate roof and dormer detailing, where symmetrical pairs of semi-detached villas are interspersed with detached villas.
