Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, now flats, were constructed circa 1830-1835. The design is attributed to R.W. Jearrad. The buildings are built with ashlar facing brick, and have hipped slate roofs and iron balconies. They are in an Italianate style.

The villas are three storeys high, with a basement level, and feature four-stage towers, with a first-floor window arrangement of 1:4:1, and two-storey, two-bay ranges that are set back on either side. Service ranges are located to the rear. The plan is double-depth, with projecting porches at the angles of the main range, and recessed single bays.

Architectural detailing includes tooled architraves to all windows; first-floor windows are eared, while ground-floor windows are round-arched, incorporate a continuous impost band. Tall casement windows are present throughout, with fanlights above the ground-floor windows. Wide eaves are supported by paired brackets. The porches have round-arched openings on three sides, with tooled heads and keystones, and flights of roll-edged steps leading to panelled doors with fanlights. The towers, located behind the entrance bays as a fourth storey, also have round-arched openings.

The ground-floor windows have individual balconies with embellished rods and an anthemion motif. The interior has not been inspected.

R.W. and C. Jearrad acquired the Lansdown development from Pearson Thompson around 1829-1830, dismissing the previous architect, J.B. Papworth, and continuing construction according to their own designs.
