Summerhouse To South West Of Regency Block Of St Edwards Middle School

The summerhouse, built around 1837 with restorations around 1990, is located to the south-west of the Regency Block of St Edward's Middle School in Charlton Kings. It was likely designed by C Baker of Cheltenham for Nathanial Hartland, a banker. The structure is made of rendered brick and features a tented lead roof. It has an octagonal shape with corner pilasters, and the windows on each side alternate between being blind and having 1/1 sash windows, all framed with architraves. There is a door on the east side with a panel above it. Inside, the summerhouse includes round-arched niches on alternating sides and a stone ledge at eaves level, which was originally supported by carved brackets. This summerhouse was formerly paired with a gazebo and is part of the setting for the south-west Regency Block of St Edward's Middle School, also known as Ashley Villa, and it groups with the drive piers at the carriage sweep.
