Description

Chapel House, formerly known as Cheltenham Chapel, is a building located on St George's Square in Cheltenham. It was constructed in 1809 and is now used as offices. The building was designed by the architect Edward Smith of Cheltenham. The front facade is made of ashlar, with some areas painted and stuccoed, and features pinkish-brown brick on the return sides. The roof is hipped and covered with slate.

The exterior consists of a single tall storey with three bays, and four-bay returns. It has quoins, a 'dado', and an upper stage band. The central entrance features tall double doors set in a stepped, round-arched surround with Doric pilasters and a keystone. There are additional outer entrances with six flush-panel doors, a cornice, and a blind overlight, all within full-height, round-arched recesses. Above these, there are multi-paned, round-arched windows with imposts and keystones. The building has wide eaves supported by brackets. The returns have four similar tall arched recesses with 15/15 sash windows on the ground floor, set on a continuous sill band, and multi-paned round-arched windows on the upper stage.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, St George's Square was laid out in 1806 on what was previously Rack Close field, and Chapel House occupies an important position next to the Bowling Green and High Street.
