Description

Numbers 15 and 17 are two terraced houses built around 1805-1820, with later additions and alterations including 20th-century extensions to the rear. The houses are stucco-faced over brick, with a concealed roof and tall brick party-wall stacks. They feature iron railings and balconies.

The two-storey houses sit on a basement and have five windows on the first floor (arranged 3:2) along with two-storey service ranges to the rear. The windows are 6/6 sash windows, taller on the first floor, with the central openings on the left-hand house being blind. All windows have plain reveals and sills, and the basement has casement windows. Flights of four steps with roll edges lead to the central and right-hand entrances, which feature 4-panel, part-glazed doors with overlights and renewed doors, set within round-arched reveals, each topped with a fanlight. The left return has two first-floor windows. The left return also displays a three-storey, two-window range, followed by a two-storey, one-window range, all with 6/6 sash windows.

The interior of the houses has not been inspected.

The first-floor balconies, and those on the left return, are embellished with a rod and central circle motif, which is also found on numbers 11, 27, 31, 33 and 37 along St George’s Place. The attached area railings have twist-head finials and urn finials to the stanchions.

Building along St George's Place began in 1805; the street was originally known as Stills Lane and served as the only route connecting the High Street with the Royal Well Spa before the Promenade was constructed. The building abuts number 11.
