Description
5 and 6 St George's Square are two terraced houses, now converted into flats, built around 1806 with later additions and alterations, particularly to No. 5 between 1860 and 1890. The buildings are constructed of stucco over brick and have a concealed roof.
The exterior features two storeys, with the right house having an attic. The left house has four first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2 pattern. Architectural details include stepped voussoirs above the first- and second-floor windows on the left, and tooled architraves with keystones on the ground- and first-floor windows of the right house. The entrance to No. 6 has a Gibbs surround, while the left house has 6/6 sash windows on the first floor, 3/6 sash windows on the second floor, and a canted bay with 1/1 sash windows on the ground floor. The right house features a stepped triple round-arched window on the ground floor with 1/1 sash windows, a tripartite sash window with 1/1 sashes and a 2/2 horizontal-pane sash on the first floor, and casements on the second floor. An attic roof dormer also has casements.
The entrances are located on the right sides of both houses: No. 6 has a round-arched opening with a 6-fielded-panel door featuring a lozenge motif on the frieze and a fanlight with a circle and leaf motif, while No. 5 has a wide opening with two 4-panel doors, one of which is part-glazed. The right house has a crowning cornice, and the left house has copings. The interior has not been inspected. St George's Square was laid out starting in 1806 on the site of Rack Close field.
