Description

Number 27 and its attached railings are a terraced house, dating to approximately 1805-1809, and now used as flats. The house is constructed of painted brick with a stucco band, and has concealed roof space, renewed stacks on the right-hand side, and wrought-iron balconies and railings. It follows a double-depth plan with a stairwell on the left side and a double-pile roof structure. The exterior is three storeys high with a basement, featuring three windows on the first floor. A first-floor band runs along the facade. The windows are 6/6 sashes, with the first-floor windows being taller, set in plain reveals with sills. The left-hand entrance has steps leading to a renewed six-panel door with a blocked fanlight set within a plain architrave. A low parapet and copings complete the exterior. The interior remains uninspected. The subsidiary features include stick railings with an urn finial to the stanchions on either side of the steps, although these have been renewed. Individual first-floor balconies feature a rod and central circle motif, a common design in the area (examples are found at numbers 11, 15, 17, 31, 33, and 37 St George’s Place). The buildings along the west side of St George’s Place, including Jenner Walk, which is a short passage leading to Chapel House, St George's Square, began construction in 1805, the site of what was formerly Cheltenham Chapel. Jenner Walk is depicted as built on a map from 1809, and was later renamed for the prominent doctor of Cheltenham who lived at number 22 St George’s Place (now demolished).
