Description

A pair of terraced houses located on St George’s Square, built around 1806 and subsequently altered. Numbered right to left, they are described from left to right. The houses are constructed with stucco over brickwork, with a concealed roof.

The two-storey houses have attics and originally had six windows on the first floor (3 windows on each side). Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication on the left and rustication drawn into voussoirs over the elliptically-arched ground-floor openings on the right. A band defines the first floor. The first-floor windows have tooled architraves, and a crowning entablature is finished with a blocking course and copings. The original windows are 6/6 sash windows, with cambered heads to those on the ground floor. The entrances are located to the right and centre, each with a 3- and 4-panel door, sidelights, and a cambered-arched overlight. Attic dormers are present on the rear elevation.

The interior of number 3 features a central hall with a dogleg staircase. This staircase has stick balusters with scrolled panels of iron ornament and a wreathed handrail.

St George's Square was laid out from 1806 onwards on a former field called Rack Close.
