Number 31 And Attached Railings

Number 31 is a terraced house dating from circa 1805-1820, built of stucco over brick. It is located on the west side of St George's Place, and includes the adjacent area railings and No.4 Jenner Walk. The house has three storeys over a basement, and is two windows wide. The original windows retain their six-over-six sashes within plain surrounds and sills. The entrance is on the left, with steps leading to a six-panel door surmounted by a fanlight with Gothic glazing. A low parapet and copings top the facade. The rear elevation also features six-over-six sashes.

Inside, a dogleg staircase is present, incorporating stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, alongside six-panel doors, simple cornices, and two marble fireplaces. Panelled shutters are also a feature. The porch displays a delicate scroll motif with Gothic arcading, and an elliptical first-floor balcony on the right features a rod and central circle design, characteristic of ornamental ironwork found along St George's Place.

Historically, St George's Place was originally Stills Lane, serving as the sole route connecting the High Street with the Royal Well Spa prior to the construction of the Promenade. Numbers 27, 31, and 33 form a group occupying a spur leading to Cheltenham Chapel, St George's Square, now also known as Jenner Walk, commemorating Dr Jenner, a renowned figure associated with the Spa town.
