Description
No. 11 St George's Place is a terraced house built around 1805 to 1820. The building features stucco over brick with a concealed roof and decorative cast- and wrought-iron balconies. It has three storeys and three first-floor windows. The stucco detailing includes tooled architraves around the windows, bands at the first and second floors, a crowning cornice, and a blocking course with copings. The windows are primarily 6/6 sashes, with taller ones on the first floor and 3/6 sashes on the second floor, all set in plain reveals with sills. The central entrance has a part-glazed, four-panel door with a fanlight and a tooled round arch supported by acanthus corbels. Inside, the staircase is located behind the front left room and features stick balusters and a newel post. The individual first-floor balconies are decorated with a rod and central circle motif, which is also seen on other houses in St George's Place. Historically, this area was originally known as Stills Lane and served as the only road connecting the High Street with the Royal Well Spa before the Promenade was built. The terrace of four houses, of which two have since been destroyed, began construction in 1805 and gave its name to the entire street.
