Description
Numbers 35 and 37 are two terraced houses, now a shop on the right with flats above, located in Cheltenham. They were built around 1805 to 1820 and feature stucco over brick, with wrought-iron balconies and iron railings. The houses are situated on a corner site and have a stepped design, with each step having a rounded end. Number 35 has a projecting shop front on the ground floor.
The exterior consists of three storeys, with part of the left side having a basement. There are four first-floor windows, featuring 6/6 sash windows, with the third bay being blind. The second and fourth bays are curved in section, all set in plain reveals with sills. The ground floor of Number 35 includes a multi-pane glazed shop front that is canted into the entrance, which has a part-glazed door topped by a cornice that projects on console brackets, with blank recesses to the left and an iron post in the center. There is an entrance below the second window, which has a 6-fielded-panel door that is curved on plan with a blind fanlight. The building has a low parapet and copings.
The return side features a shop front on the ground floor, while the rest has blind openings. The individual balconies at the first-floor windows have a rod and central circle motif, which is also seen on several other houses along St George's Place. The area railings to the left have stick balusters.
Historically, the buildings along the west side of St George's Place began construction in 1805. Originally known as Stills Lane, this road was the only route connecting the High Street with the Royal Well Spa before the Promenade was built.
