Description
Charlton House is a house that has been converted into offices, built around 1810 with later additions and alterations, including a mid-20th century wing to the southwest. It was constructed for the Higgs family and features cement-rendered walls topped with a hipped slate roof.
The exterior is three storeys high and has three bays, with the outer bays designed as full-height segmental bows, making a total of seven windows arranged in a 3:1:3 pattern. The central entrance consists of a four-panel door set within a doorcase that has pilasters and flanking windows, along with a frieze decorated with paterae and a pediment above. The windows throughout the building are 6/6 sashes, and there is a cornice at the parapet.
Inside, the building includes panelled shutters and a grand stair hall featuring a segmental arch and moulded cornices. The cantilevered stone staircase has moulded soffits and a wrought-iron balustrade.
