Description

Charlton Lodge (Number 5) and Wing Cottage (Number 7) are a pair of houses dating to approximately 1798–1806, originally commissioned for Charles Higgs. The houses were extended in the 1830s for Charles Cooke Higgs, with further additions and alterations made later. They are constructed of brick with a stucco façade, and have a hipped slate roof. An iron verandah is also present. A first-floor band, cornice, and blocking course are visible externally.

The front of the houses presents a three-storey extension to the main house, slightly lower in height. The second floor has three windows with 8/8 sashes between 6/6 sashes. On the ground floor, there is a casement window to the left and a 6/6 sash to the right. A flight of roll-edged steps leads to a central entrance with a 5-panel door, featuring an oval lower panel, now partly glazed, and an overlight within a two-columnar, fluted Doric porch with frieze and architrave. A glazed balcony verandah from the early 20th century sits above the porch. To the right are two 6/6 sashes on stepped levels. All windows are in plain reveals with sills. The west front is two storeys high at the higher level, featuring three 6/6 sashes and a blind window, all within moulded surrounds with cornices resting on shaped consoles. A tented verandah extends from the ground floor, supported by iron patterned standards, which are now mostly glazed in. The interiors have not been inspected. The Higgs family, including father and son both named Charles, also owned Glenfall House, located on Mill Lane.
