Description

Langton Lodge is a house built between 1806 and 1808, and restored in 1987. It may have been designed by Thomas Billings, who was involved in The Park development in Cheltenham. The house is constructed with stucco over brick, and has a renewed slate roof. The main part of the house is two storeys and a basement, with three windows on the first floor, and a service wing to the left, also with three first-floor windows, which projects slightly forward.

The front of the main range has a plinth and steps lead to a central entrance with a tetrastyle Doric porch, a frieze, and a cornice. The porch has been glazed in and contains double doors with an overlight featuring margin-lights. Flanking the entrance are two round-arched windows with margin-lights and etched glass. The ground floor windows are tall 6/6 sashes, accompanied by 2/2 sashes, all with tooled architraves. A first-floor band runs along the elevation. The first floor has tripartite windows – 6/6 sashes flanked by 2/2 sashes, with an 8/8 sash in the centre, all with plain reveals and sills. A dentil cornice and wide eaves top the facade, with a hipped roof and end stacks. The basement has elliptically-arched openings, and the service wing features a 6/6 sash. The garden facade includes a patio with a balustrade featuring bulbous balusters and arabesque ornament to the piers.

Inside, there is a wrought-iron staircase, and the staircase hall has an egg-and-dart and modillion cornice. A room at the rear right has a moulded cornice with a grape frieze. Four-panel doors are found throughout. The house was originally named 'Charlotteville'.
