Description
Normanhurst is a villa, now a residential home, built in 1882 for the Smith family. It features ashlar facades over a brick structure and a slate roof, designed in the Dutch Baroque style. The building is two storeys high and has a total of four bays, with the three central bays projecting forward, while the outer bays are stepped, and the right-hand bay is plain. The central bay contains a tower porch topped with a pyramidal roof.
The villa showcases 1/1 sash windows, which are adorned with carved ornament panels depicting flowers and birds. The first-floor windows have sunburst-motif hoods featuring lion masks, while the ground floor windows are topped with shallow pediments. The arched central doorway consists of six-panel arched double doors, with the upper panels being glazed and lion mask handles. There are six tall ashlar stacks with cornices at the ends and center, some of which have been rebuilt.
Inside, photographs from around 1990 reveal contemporary mouldings and fittings, including marble fireplaces and a stained glass stair window. The entrance hall has a Coalbrookdale tile floor, and there are six-panel doors throughout. This villa is noted for its unusual and distinctive architectural style.
