Description

Hatherley House is a villa, dating from approximately 1820 to 1850, and later altered, including the addition of a 20th-century range to the rear. The exterior is constructed of ashlar facing brick, with a hipped slate roof and rear ashlar stacks. The building is two storeys with a basement and attic, originally featuring five first-floor windows, the central one recessed. The ground floor has mostly blind openings, with a single 1/1 sash window to the left of centre. The first floor has a sill band, and a 2/2 sash window centrally. The basement includes 6/6 sash windows. The central entrance is distinguished by two Ionic columns in antis, a frieze, and a dentil cornice, leading to double doors with side-lights and an overlight. Round-arched attic dormers have casements. Wide eaves are supported by brackets. The right return elevation displays a six-window range with a full-height canted bay, with 6/6, 1/1, and 2/2 sash windows to the basement, ground, and first floors respectively. The interior was not inspected. The building occupies an important location at the junction with Lansdown Road.
