Description

Pillar box located at the junction with Queen's Road, built between 1866 and 1879. It was designed by J.W. Penfold and cast by Cochrane Grove and Company of Dudley. The pillar box is hexagonal and features an elaborate leaf-decorated crest along with the lettering 'VR'. Cheltenham is home to 8 of the 64 Penfold-type Victorian pillar boxes that are believed to still exist in the country. Other examples can be found in Bayshill Road, College Lawn, Douro Road, Evesham Road, Montpellier Walk, Pittville Circus Road, and St Paul's Road.
