Description
Numbers 2 to 24 and attached railings form a terrace of twelve houses built around 1820 to 1850. The houses are constructed with stucco over brick, featuring a slate roof, brick and stucco party-wall stacks, and iron railings and balconies. They have a double-depth plan, with side staircases and 1-, 2- and 3-storey service ranges to the rear.
The architecture is three storeys on basements, with 24 first-floor windows (two per house). Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor, bands defining the ground, first, and second floors, a crowning frieze and cornice, and a blocking course. Most windows are 6/6 sashes, tall to the first floor, although the ground floor of numbers 20 and 22 have 6/6 sashes between 2/2 sashes, and the house to the right has 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes between 2/2 sashes. All windows are in plain reveals and have sills; the ground-floor sills have panelled aprons. Side entrances have flights of roll-edged steps leading to four-panel doors, some of which are part-glazed and have divided overlights. The rear of the houses retain original 6/6 sashes.
The interior retains original joinery, including panelled shutters. A continuous first-floor balcony features bowed rods and a frieze of circles. Individual balconies to the second floor of numbers 22 and 24 have a scroll motif; number 22's balcony includes a scroll and roundel. Railings are present to the sides of steps throughout the terrace.
