Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, known as The Priory and Treaford House, were constructed around 1830 to 1850. They are now used as offices and flats. The properties are built of stucco over brick, with slate mansard roofs and end stacks.

Architecturally, the buildings are two storeys with basements and attics, featuring eight first-floor windows, arranged as 3:2:3 per house. The central windows of the main range are set back. The stucco detailing includes pilaster strips flanking the central windows, and end octagonal piers topped with castellated finials. The main ranges have three-light windows with four-centred arched heads within straight-headed, moulded surrounds, and hood moulds. The central first-floor window of each house has a four-centred arch and cusped lights, housing mainly two-over-two sashes, while the ground floor windows also have margin-lights. Projecting castellated porches feature lozenge friezes and end pinnacles, incorporating four-centred arched openings that lead to four-panel, part-glazed double doors and a six-panel door with a shaped overlight. A parapet incorporates turret pinnacles. The bays that join the two houses have drip moulds; those on the left side include mullion windows, and those on the right have sashes. Attic roof dormers have three-over-three sashes. A low parapet completes the exterior.

Treaford House contains an open-well staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, and the ceilings feature embellished plaster cornices with Gothic details.
