Description
A pair of cottages dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. They are constructed of plastered cob walls, with gable ended thatched roofs. There are brick axial stacks and projecting rubble stacks with brick shafts at each end. Originally, it is believed they comprised four one-room cottages, although they are currently arranged as two two-room cottages. Lane Cottage, on the left, is thought to be the earlier building, with Leybrook likely added in the early 18th century, with later 19th and 20th century additions to the rear of both.
The two-storey front has an asymmetrical four-window arrangement. Lane Cottage has 3-light casement windows to the ground floor, and a 19th-century leaded pane casement window on the first floor. A 20th-century thatched porch with a part-glazed door is located to the right. Leybrook has a more regular two-window front with 2-light casement windows, and a 20th-century plank door in the centre. A shallow sloping buttress is situated at the left-hand end.
Inside Lane Cottage, the left-hand room features an open fireplace with a narrow chamfered wooden lintel and oven. Access to the roof space is not possible, but the feet of substantial straight principals and heavy purlins are visible from the first floor. The interior of Leybrook has been heavily modernised, obscuring any original features, although a similar open fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel and oven is present in the left-hand room.
