Description
Clapperdown Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around the mid-17th century, with a late 17th-century addition. It features rendered cob walls and partly rendered rubble on the wing. The main range has a thatched roof, hipped at both ends, while the wing has a gable-ended slate roof. There is an axial rubble stack with a drip course, and the wing has a brick stack at the gable end. The layout consists of a three-room plan with a baffle entry in front of the axial stack, which serves both the central and right-hand rooms. A rear wing was added behind the right-hand end in the late 17th century and is heated by the gable end stack.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front. The first floor features early 20th-century three and four-light casements, while the ground floor has mid to late 20th-century casements. There is a 20th-century timber and glazed gabled porch to the right of centre with a contemporary door. The wing projects to the rear of the right-hand end, and there is a 20th-century lean-to at the rear in the angle.
Inside the rear wing, there is one exposed cross beam that is chamfered with ogee stops. Other early features are not visible, but large open fireplaces are likely concealed in the main range. This farmhouse is an interesting and relatively unusual example in Devon of a complete 17th-century farmhouse with a baffle entry plan, as opposed to the more common three-room-and-through-passage plan.
