Description
BONDLEIGH SS 60 NE 3/4 Clapperdown Farmhouse II
Farmhouse. Circa mid C17 with late C17 addition. Rendered cob walls, partly rendered rubble to wing. Main range has thatched roof, hipped at either end, gable ended slate roof to wing. Axial rubble stack with dripcourse, wing has gable end brick stack. Plan: 3 room plan with baffle entry in front of axial stack which serves both central and right-hand room. Rear wing added behind right-hand end in late C17, heated by gable end stack. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front, on 1st floor are early C20 3 and 4 light casements, mid-later C20 casements below. C20 timber and glazed gabled porch to right of centre with contemporary door. Wing projects to rear of right- hand end. C20 leanto at rear in the angle. Interior: in the rear wing is one exposed cross beam which is chamfered with ogee stops. Otherwise no early features are visible but large open fireplaces are likely to be concealed in the main range. This house is an interesting and relatively unusual example in Devon of a completely C17 farmhouse with baffle entry plan as opposed to the more customary 3 room-and- through-passage plan.
