Description

Foxhole Manor is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of colourwashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, topped with a turnerized rag slate roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right end of the main range, with a hipped rear wing. The main range features an axial stack with a brick shaft on the left and a stone stack with a brick shaft at the right end. The layout consists of three rooms and a through passage, with the hall and inner room heated by the axial stack. The inner room seems to have served as a kitchen at one time, and the lower end is heated. At the rear of the through passage, there is a right wing that is likely an 18th-century addition. Additionally, a single-storey lean-to at the angle between the wing and the main range is probably a late 19th or 20th-century addition.

The building is two storeys high and has a long, asymmetrical front with five windows. The through passage doorway is located to the right, leading to an open porch with a slate roof supported by granite monoliths. There are 20th-century French windows on the left side of the front, and a small 12-pane 19th-century casement window to the left of the front door, which retains its stanchions. The remaining windows are regular 20th-century three-light casements.

Inside, the hall features a fireplace with ashlar jambs and a replaced lintel. The inner room has two roughly hewn cross beams and a fireplace with ashlar jambs and a chamfered lintel. The through passage is slated, and there are 20th-century roof trusses. The unusual plan, with the hall stack against the inner wall, is notable for the region and for Devon as a whole.
