Description
North Thorne Farmhouse is a circa late 16th century farmhouse, with alterations dating from the circa late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, with the upper section whitewashed and rendered. The roof is covered with bitumen-painted slate, gabled at the ends, and was formerly thatched. There are projecting lateral stacks on the front, one heating the hall with a tall stone chimney shaft of squared masonry, and a smaller rendered stack at the right end heating the inner room. The farmhouse originally had a 3-room and through-passage plan, with the inner room likely originally unheated. A straight joint indicates that the lower end has been rebuilt and is now used as a farmbuilding. A 2-storey rear addition to the higher end may have originated as a single-storey dairy or service rooms. The through-passage plan is still evident, with a blocked doorway leading from the passage to the lower end. A circa late 18th century straight stair has been inserted at the rear of the hall. The roof has been raised and the roof trusses replaced, likely in the late 19th or early 20th century.
The front of the farmhouse has an asymmetrical 1:3 window arrangement, with a loft entrance in the lower end. A wide, open-fronted stone porch with a sloping corrugated asbestos roof and a wide front door leads into the through passage to the right of the lower end. To the right of the passage is a large, slightly projecting lateral stack with a tall stone shaft and a semi-circular projecting bread oven. The two ground floor windows to the right are circa 20th century 3-light casements with 3 panes per light, and the three first floor windows are also circa 20th century 3-light casements with 3 panes per light. The lower end has a first-floor loft entrance above a 2-light window to the left of a ventilation slit. A lower farmbuilding adjoins the lower end on the left, with a slate roof hipped at the left end, an entrance on the front at the right, and an opening under the eaves on the left.
Inside, the fireplace to the hall stack is of circa 20th century construction; earlier jambs and lintel may be concealed behind. The hall has one large chamfered ceiling beam, the stops of which may be hidden by the wall plaster. The inner room also has a roughly-chamfered ceiling beam and a circa 20th century fireplace. The partition enclosing the stair has wide horizontal planking. A wide plank door is located between the passage and hall, and there is a circa early 19th century doorframe. The roof trusses over the higher end are of circa 20th century design.
