Description

Carey Cottage is a house dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. It is constructed of colourwashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings, with a slate roof that is half-hipped at the right end and fully hipped at the left end. A stone axial stack is located on the right side, with a 20th-century rendered stack at the left end.

The original plan comprised two rooms in a single depth, with the right-hand room originally heated and a probable integral storage room with a loft above and a separate entrance adjoining at the right end. A short screen sits to the right of the direct entry, leading into the principal right-hand room, which has a rear stair positioned behind a partition. A stone rubble lean-to is attached to the left side, and a small, 20th-century single-storey flat-roofed addition extends from the rear.

The front facade is symmetrical, featuring three bays. A central half-glazed front door is protected by a sloping corrugated iron canopy supported by timber brackets. A 2-light casement window with 3 panes per light, likely dating from the late 19th century, sits above the front door. The remaining windows are 3-light casements with 8 panes per light, and are likely original to the house. The adjoining storage room has a separate entrance on the front and a loft entrance on its right return.

Inside, the principal room (right-hand) has exposed joists, with a blocked fireplace. A circa late 18th-century panelled door leads into the lower end. The interior remains largely unmodernized, and the integral store at the higher end is an unusual survival.
