Description
The Ashwater War Memorial Cross is located on the village green, near several listed buildings, including the Grade I Church of St Peter. This memorial features a tall granite wheel-head cross, with the front face decorated with interlace patterns and spirals carved in low relief. The cross shaft rises from a tapering plinth that sits on a low step. Surrounding the memorial are railings attached to four tall granite posts.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "IN HONOUR OF ALL ASHWATER MEN WHO FOUGHT IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 AND IN MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING WHO FELL FOR KING AND COUNTRY" followed by 12 names. On the rear face of the plinth, a later inscription states: "ALSO IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE WHO PAID THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE 1939-1945 WAR" followed by 4 names, concluding with "GRANT UNTO THEM ETERNAL REST."
