Description

The Hoo St Werburgh War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes later additions for the Second World War. It is made of carved granite and features a granite wheel-headed cross, which is adorned with a long sword pointing downwards. The cross is mounted on a rubble-faced tapering square plinth, which rests on a single step also faced with rubble. The memorial is located within a circular paved area. Each side of the plinth has a dressed panel that displays inscriptions in black leaded letters. The inscriptions read: "TO THE / GREATER GLORY OF GOD / AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918 / MAY THEY REST IN PEACE // NAMES // OUR / GLORIOUS / DEAD // 1939 – 1945 / NAMES."
