Description

The Church of St Werburgh is a parish church that dates from the 12th to the 15th centuries. It is constructed of ragstone with tiled roofs. The church features a west tower topped with a shingled spire, a nave with north and south aisles, as well as north and south porches and a chancel. The west tower is battlemented and includes a northwest turret, all embraced by the aisles. The Norman pilaster buttresses, adorned with tufa dressings, can be seen over the roofs of the aisles. The aisles contain 14th-century windows with cusped intersecting tracery.

Inside, the church has 13th-century nave arcades consisting of three bays supported by round piers and double chamfered arches. There are blocked east arches in each aisle that once led to transeptal chapels. The clerestorey dates from the 15th century, while the chancel arch is from the 14th century. The nave roof is supported by wooden shafts featuring carved angels in the capital zone. Notable interior features include a piscina and triple sedilia with multi-cusped arches on long shafts made of Bethersden marble. The church also has 15th-century glass in the chancel window-heads and a chest tomb dedicated to Edward Lake, who died in 1845, complete with an ogee canopy and pinnacles that are not unarchaeologically early 15th century.
