Description
Ashwater Barton is a farmhouse likely dating from the 17th century, with some remodelling in the 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble, partly colourwashed and rendered, and features a slate roof that is gabled at the right end. There is a rendered chimney at the right end, a brick chimney at the left end, and a rendered rear lateral stack in a shallow gabled projection with a slate roof. The building has a single depth, three-room plan, which probably originally included a through passage that no longer exists. The hall was heated from the lateral stack, with both the inner room and lower end also having heating. The present entrance leads into a stair hall.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical five-window front, with irregular fenestration at the left end. There is a 20th-century lean-to porch on the front at the right. The windows are mainly late 19th and early 20th century, featuring two- and three-light casements with six and eight panes per light, except for the hall window to the left of the front door, which has 15 panes per light, and the ground floor window on the left, which has 12 panes per light. The interior fireplaces are from the 20th century but may conceal earlier features. The roof space has not been inspected.
