Description
The Holsworthy War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, which is a Grade II*-listed building. It stands to the south of the church tower and near several other Grade II-listed structures. The memorial features a tall wheel-head cross made of Cornish granite, enclosed by a chained area marked by granite posts.
The wheel-head cross is adorned with intricate carved interlace patterns on both the cross head and the shaft. The shaft rises from a tapering pedestal, which is set on a two-stepped granite base. Surrounding the cross are 11 pyramidal granite posts that support a pair of chains, with an entrance on the east side.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal reads: "ERECTED TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914-1918, BY THE PARISHIONERS OF HOLSWORTHY (NAMES)." Below this, on the front face of the upper step, is the inscription: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
On the rear face of the pedestal is a later dedication, which states: "IN MEMORY OF (NAMES) WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES DURING THE 1939 – 45 WAR GIVE UNTO THY SERVANTS THAT PEACE WHICH THE WORLD CANNOT GIVE."
