Description

These shops with accommodation above were built around 1900 in an Italianate style. They are constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings, quoins, a moulded brick entablature, modillion cornice, and a slate roof with decorative ridge tiles. The building forms a rectangular block of three single-fronted shops, with entrances on the right side of each, and separate staircases to the upper floors.

The building is three storeys high, with a 2:4 bay arrangement. The upper floors feature paired semicircular-headed window openings with keystones. These are divided by colonnettes with floral capitals, the outer capitals extending as a decorative frieze that links the paired windows. Quoins mark the window openings. The windows have sash glazing without glazing bars. A plain moulded string course separates the first and second floors. A decorative cast iron balcony runs along the first floor, supported by rusticated pillars with decorative capitals, which are now painted.

Adjoining doorways are situated to the right, each with brackets above. A late 20th-century fascia obscures the modillion cornice. Two original shop fronts remain on the right side, featuring moulded plinths, panelled soffits, glazed doors. The lefthand shop front (number 12) has been rebuilt in the late 20th century. Although the facade appears symmetrical, the two end bays on the right are set closer together. The detailing closely resembles that of number 3 North Road and other buildings along Holsworthy Road that have undergone alterations.
