1 And 2, Bodmin Street

Two houses, now functioning as one commercial property, date from the late 18th century or early 19th century, possibly incorporating features from the mid-18th century. They are constructed of brick in Flemish bond with a part rendered rubble plinth and slate roofs. The frontages have a manngrist form, but the interiors and windows are all from the late 19th century.

No. 1 has two storeys with three windows, all featuring 4-pane sashes set in brick splayed arches with a central fluted keystone. The entrance is a wide six-panel door with a side panel, topped by a transom light, and accessed by two steps. There is a mid string course.

No. 3 also has two storeys, with three plus one windows, all 4-pane sashes in brick splayed arches with a fluted keystone. It has three doors: one is a six-panel door with a transom light, another is glazed with a transom light, and the third is a six-panel door with a transom light. At the left end and between the third and fourth windows are brick pilasters with moulded brick bases and stone caps featuring triglyphs. These caps and triglyphs do not align with any architrave but simply support an eaves band. The overall design presents a puzzling frontage, suggesting an ambitious vision for the street that is not continued beyond these two buildings.
