Description

13 and 15 Castle Street and 2 Paradise Court is a building that originally consisted of three houses but is now used as one office. It dates from the mid to late 18th century and has undergone some alterations over time. The structure features Flemish bond brickwork with light headers set on a stone plinth, with all dressings made of painted stone. It has a modillioned eaves cornice and a solid parapet. The roof is covered with modern slate and includes a gabled dormer and skylights, along with a modern end chimney stack.

The building is two storeys high, with a total of six bays for No.13 and five bays for No.15, all under a common roof. It has a double-depth plan, with a rear four-bay extension and a right-angle three-bay section that is No.2 Paradise Court. A central segmental through-carriageway, which has painted quoining, divides the two houses.

No.13, located on the left, features a central panelled door with a fanlight, accessed by steps and set within an open-pedimented columned doorcase that has a block entablature and dentils. It has modern shop windows on either side. No.15 has a panelled central door in a pilastered pedimented doorcase with console brackets, also flanked by modern shop windows. To the extreme right, there is a quoined round-headed arch fitted with an iron gate that provides access to Paradise Court behind. Above, there are sash windows set in brick reveals with flat brick arches, false keystones, and painted stone sills.

Inside, the ground floor has been altered at the front, but many original 18th-century details remain, including panelled doors in panelled reveals, wooden staircases with turned newel posts, squared balusters, and moulded handrails. The moulded plaster ceiling cornices are also original, and the upper floor features a wooden fire surround decorated with swags. The interior of No.2 Paradise Court showcases exposed original roof timbers.
