Description

The Boardroom Public House, located at No.42 Castle Street and including No.9 Paternoster Row, is a public house with a manager's flat above. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features painted rendered walls on a chamfered painted plinth, with V-jointed quoins and a bracketed gutter around the gable return. It has a graduated green slate roof with coped gables and kneelers, along with original painted rendered end chimney stacks. The structure is three storeys high and consists of four bays, with a five-bay return on Paternoster Row.

The entrance includes an off-centre panelled door with an overlight set in a pilastered door surround. There is a through passage opening on the extreme right with an iron gate. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are framed in painted stone architraves, with those on the upper floors featuring bracketed sills. The return section has a right panelled door and overlight in a painted stone architrave, and a left panelled door and overlight in plain reveals. The windows on this side are similar to those on Castle Street.

The interior of the ground floor has been altered. Historically, BC Jones noted that the deeds for this house date back to 1651. It operated as "The Board Inn" under the Carlisle and District State Management Scheme from 1916 to 1972. A photograph from the 1920s in the Carlisle Museum collection shows the ground floor before its alterations in the 1960s and 1980s.
