Description
4 and 5 Paternoster Row is a house and shop built in 1855. The building features Flemish bond brickwork on a chamfered painted stone plinth, with calciferous sandstone dressings, string courses (the uppermost one underlain with white brick), and gutter brackets. It has a Welsh slate roof with original tall ridge and end brick chimney stacks. The structure is two stories high, comprising a three-bay house and a two-bay shop, designed as one unit with a double-depth plan.
The house, located on the left, has a central panelled door with a fanlight, framed by a quoined surround and supported by Corinthian-capital Shap granite columns in antis. The ground floor features sash windows set in brick reveals with chamfered Shap granite sills, while the upper floor has sandstone sills. There is a left canted oriel window. A large panelled carriage doorway with a flat arch separates the house and shop, accompanied by cast-iron fluted angle bollards and 19th-century ceramic-tiled pilasters. The shop front includes a central door and flanking windows beneath an overall headboard, which is adorned with a wooden bracketed and modillioned cornice. The upper windows match those of the house. At the time of the survey, all ground-floor windows were boarded over.
Inside the house, there are notable 19th-century details, including mosaic tiles in the hall, panelled doors, marble fireplaces, and the original staircase. The Carlisle Journal from March 23, 1855, notes the building's construction coincided with the discovery of a Roman road while digging the cellar.
