Description

17 Castle Street is a house that has been converted into a shop with storage space above. It was built in 1798, as indicated by the inscription "J & MF" on the lead rainwater head, and it was constructed as a pair with No. 19. The building features painted rendered walls resting on a rendered plinth, with a string course and a modillioned eaves cornice. It has a slate roof and brick chimney stacks at the ridge and ends.

The house is three storeys high and has three bays, designed as a double-depth house with stairs on the front side. The entrance consists of a left panelled door with a glazed fanlight, framed by pilasters and topped with a bracketed cornice, accessed by steps. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, set in painted stone architraves, and there are smaller attic windows.

Inside, the property includes panelled doors within panelled reveals and internal panelled shutters on each floor. The ceilings are adorned with moulded plaster cornices and a picture rail. A cantilever stone staircase features wrought-iron scrolled balusters and a moulded wooden handrail, along with a contemporary wrought-iron safety rail. The upper floor contains a painted stone fireplace decorated with heraldic roundels. For more details, refer to the description of No. 19 Castle Street next door.
