Description
58 Eastgate Street is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the early 19th century, with some minor internal alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, with the front faced in ashlar, and features a slate roof and brick stacks. It is designed as a double-depth block with a rear wing, and it may have originally been intended as part of a terrace development.
The exterior of the building is three storeys high and has a symmetrical projecting front with three bays. It features an offset plinth and a raised band at the first-floor level that supports a giant order of shallow Ionic pilasters. These pilasters rise through the tall first floor and short second floor, supporting an entablature and pediment, with second-floor sill bands positioned between them. The ground floor includes a central, projecting, single-storey entrance porch that is flanked by two fluted Doric columns set between square corner piers, topped with an entablature and a plain frieze. The doorway has a rectangular fanlight above it, with sash windows on either side that have glazing bars arranged in three rows of four panes, set in openings with raised sills. The first floor features three taller sash windows with the same glazing bar configuration, set in openings with recessed panels below the sills. The second floor has three shorter sash windows with glazing bars arranged in three rows of two panes.
Inside, some rooms still have original fireplaces and joinery. A geometrical staircase with stone treads and a curtail step connects the ground and first floors, featuring wrought-iron stick balusters and a swept-timber handrail.
