Description
A pair of early 19th-century houses, now offices, located on Eastgate Street in Gloucester. The buildings were originally shown on Ordnance Survey maps as numbers 9 and 11 Barton Street, and were once known as Oddfellows Hall. They are constructed of stuccoed brick with a slate roof and rendered stacks. The houses are arranged as a double-depth block, mirroring each other with extensions to the right of number 69 and to the rear of the same property.
The front facade is symmetrical, featuring six bays. A first-floor sill band runs across the front, and a crowning cornice is visible on number 67 with a rebuilt parapet on number 69. A double entrance porch is centrally positioned, projecting forward and supporting a single pediment, although much of the pediment’s original detailing has been lost due to repairs using cement. Three stone steps lead to the doorways; the entrance to number 69 has a mid-20th-century traceried fanlight, while number 67 features a six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight. To either side of the entrances are sash windows with glazing bars (3x4 panes), with projecting stone sills. The first floor has sash windows similar to those on the ground floor. The second floor windows are shorter sashes, also with glazing bars (3x3 panes) and projecting stone sills. A recessed, full-width dormer was added in the 20th century to the roof of number 69.
The interior of number 69 retains an original staircase with stick balusters. The interior of number 67 was not inspected.
