Description

A pair of shops and former dwellings dating from the mid to late 18th century, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is located on Eastgate Street, and was formerly recorded on Ordnance Survey maps as number 18 in Barton Street. Constructed of rendered and painted brick, it has a tiled, end-gabled roof. The building is a double-depth block, arranged over three storeys. The front elevation features four bays, a crowning cornice, and a coped parapet. Both shop fronts are framed by 19th-century pilasters with drop-arched brackets at the angled fascias. Number 62 retains its original cast-iron shop window frame with a recessed entry on the right; the shop window of number 64 was replaced in the 20th century. The first floor has four sash windows with 3x4 panes of glazing bars, and the second floor has four shorter sashes with the same glazing pattern, all set in openings with projecting stone sills. The rear elevation features an eaves cornice and two hipped roof dormers, each with a pair of casements featuring a single horizontal glazing bar. A rear extension to number 64 includes a doorway with Ionic pilasters, a broken pediment, and a 6-panel door with a fanlight; this doorway is believed to be 18th century but may have been salvaged from another building. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
