Description
This is a house, built in the 1830s as part of the development of Clarence Street by builder William Rees, and incorporating a smaller attached house fronting Eastgate Street, now combined into a single block of offices. The building is constructed of ashlar facing brick, with hipped slate roofs and brick stacks. It is a double-depth block with three storeys and a basement, the basement areas now infilled.
The front facing Clarence Street is symmetrical, with three bays and a slight projection to the central bay. It features an offset plinth, raised bands at first and second floor levels, and a deep crowning entablature. Corner piers have moulded bases and rusticated detailing, supporting giant Ionic pilasters that support the entablature. The central doorway has stone steps, a doorcase with pilasters and entablature, and a panelled door. Sashes with glazing bars (3x4 panes) are present in plain openings with projecting sills.
The Eastgate Street return of No.2 Clarence Street is two bays wide on the left, and the front of No.57 Eastgate Street is two bays on the right. These sections feature raised bands, a crowning entablature, and giant Ionic pilasters like the Clarence Street front, with a central pilaster strip (a former Ionic pilaster having been removed). The ground floor wall between the corner piers and the central pier is rusticated. Late 20th-century alterations include lowering the sills to two ground-floor sashes on the left, and remodelling the ground floor of No.57 Eastgate Street with a central doorway framed by pilasters and entablature, and a sash window on each side. First-floor sashes are tall, and second-floor sashes have glazing bars (3x4 panes). The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
