Description
14 and 16 Castle Street are three houses in a row, now two houses that are part of the unoccupied City Hall and a shop. They date from the late 17th century or early 18th century and the late 18th century, with later alterations. The buildings are constructed of painted brick on a chamfered stone plinth, with all dressings made of painted stone. No. 16 features Flemish bond brickwork on its chamfered plinth. The roofs are rebuilt with Welsh slate and do not have chimney stacks. No. 14 is the older house, projecting into the street, similar to other 17th-century properties that once lined this street but are now demolished. The building is low, with two storeys and two bays. No. 14 has a right-hand 20th-century door with an overlight in a stone surround, and a left-hand 20th-century shop window beneath a small casement. The right bay is set back and features a plank door with an overlight in a rounded stone arch with a false keystone, and a sash window above with glazing bars in brick reveals. No. 16 has central recessed 20th-century double doors (formerly two doorways) in a stone surround. It also has sash windows with glazing bars, stone sills, and wedge lintels on the ground floor. The interior of No. 14 includes beamed ceilings, and one plank door on the upper floor has strap hinges. No. 16 has been gutted.
