Description

No. 3 Castle Street is a house that has been converted into an office. It was built in the 1840s for George Gill Mounsey. The building is constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar and features a chamfered stone plinth, raised quoins, a string course, a cornice, and a solid parapet. The roof is slate, with 19th and 20th century brick chimney stacks at either end.

The structure is two storeys high and has three symmetrical bays. The central bay is recessed and full-height, also featuring raised quoins. The entrance consists of a central 20th century panelled door with an overlight, set within a tetrastyle pilastered surround topped by a plain entablature and cornice. The building has sash windows with glazing bars, framed by stone architraves. The upper floor windows have cornices, while the ground floor windows have aprons, including the one over the entrance.

Inside, the property has panelled doors within wooden architraves, and the ceilings are adorned with moulded plaster cornices. The hall features scrolled brackets, and there is an internal stone staircase with patterned cast-iron balusters and a moulded wooden handrail. Some plain painted stone fire surrounds are also present. For more information on the Mounsey family and their significance in the community, refer to Country Life from 7 September 1989.
