Description
Penroses is a mid-19th century dwelling, now used as a doctor's surgery. It comprises a main parallel range with a service wing at the rear. The front elevation has two storeys and three bays, with a rendered finish simulating ashlar, and a roughcast right return. The roof is slate, with roughcast stacks on the gable ends topped with moulded caps. Tripartite 16-pane sash windows are fitted with horns. A central square-headed door opening is topped by console brackets supporting a moulded entablature. The door itself is of two-panel design with glazed upper panels, and chamfered arrises to the lower panels. A plaque on the right-hand bay dates to 1976 and indicates that the house was occupied by the Reverend S.S. Wesley when he composed ‘An Air on the Holsworthy Bells’. This piece was composed specifically for the carillon of the Church of St Peter and St Paul. The interior has not been inspected.
