Description

No 1 Chapel Street is a mid-19th century building that originally served as two dwellings and is now used as shops with accommodation above. The structure is rendered and features a shallow pitch slate roof with sprockets at the eaves and brick stacks at the gable ends. It has a rectangular plan with a lean-to addition at the rear and stands two storeys tall, with a facade comprising three bays on the left and two on the right.

On the first floor, the left side has three 12-pane sash windows with flat surrounds, while the right side has two 4-pane sash windows with similar surrounds, both set just below the eaves. Below these, there is an early 20th-century double shop front, a late 20th-century plate glass window on the left, and an entrance on the right flanked by a sash window with a single vertical glazing bar in the upper light, all with similar surrounds. The door opening is square-headed with a moulded entablature supported by brackets, and it features a rectangular light divided by a central glazing bar and a 20th-century four-panel door.

The left return of the rear half of the gable end wall is splayed out, while the right half contains 12-pane sashes with flat surrounds. The left half features a 16-pane sash window on the first floor and a 20th-century shop window below. The unusual angle of the right gable end may be connected to the Great Tree of Holsworthy, which stood against this wall until the early 20th century. This building is illustrated in "Holsworthy" by Leeson Day, published by The Devonshire Association Parochial Histories in 1934.
